How to create an llms.txt file
- Draft it. Enter your site above, or pick the template closest to it. A draft is a starting point, not a finished file.
- Cut it down. Keep the pages that answer what people ask about you: what you offer, prices, docs, policies, contact details. Ten to forty links is plenty. Move nice-to-have pages under Optional.
- Describe each page. A few words after each link (
- [Pricing](https://…): plans and limits) tell an assistant whether the page is worth opening. Write the summary line too; it is the line assistants quote when they describe your site. - Publish it at the root. Save it as
llms.txtso it opens athttps://your-site.com/llms.txt, served as plain text with a 200. - Check it. Use step 03 above, then run the full access check to make sure the AI crawlers you want can reach the pages it lists.
Where to put llms.txt on your platform
| Platform | How |
|---|---|
| Any web server | Upload llms.txt to the web root, the folder that holds robots.txt. |
| Next.js, Astro, Hugo, Vite and other static builds | Put it in the folder copied to the site root as is: public/ for Next.js, Astro and Vite, static/ for Hugo and SvelteKit. |
| WordPress | Yoast SEO (free, from version 25.3) and Rank Math both have an llms.txt setting that builds the file from your posts and pages; pick the pages yourself rather than accept the defaults. Or upload your own file to the site root over SFTP or your host’s file manager. |
| Shopify | Shopify answers /llms.txt for stores with a file it generates, so check what yours says first. Theme developers report that a templates/llms.txt.liquid file in the theme replaces it, as robots.txt.liquid does for robots.txt. |
| Docs platforms | Mintlify and GitBook generate llms.txt and llms-full.txt for published docs automatically. Check the result rather than writing your own. |
Whatever the platform, make sure bot protection doesn’t challenge /llms.txt, and that the site doesn’t answer the path with its home page. Both are common, and step 03 catches them.

Questions
What is an llms.txt file?
A short Markdown file at the root of a website, at /llms.txt, that tells AI assistants and agents what the site is and which pages to read first. It starts with the site’s name as a heading and a one-line summary, followed by sections of links with a few words about each. The format was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024.
Is this llms.txt generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Drafting from your site reads only public pages (your home page, its sitemap and a few linked pages) and nothing is stored. The templates and the editor run in your browser.
Where do I put the llms.txt file?
At the root of your domain, so it opens at https://your-site.com/llms.txt, next to robots.txt. Serve it as text/plain or text/markdown with a 200 status. A file in a subfolder, or one your site answers with its home page, will not be found.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt?
No. robots.txt says which crawlers may fetch which pages. llms.txt is a reading list for AI tools and controls nothing. Use the robots.txt generator to decide which AI crawlers may read your site.
Will an llms.txt improve my ranking in Google or ChatGPT?
Not directly. Google has said its systems don’t use llms.txt, and none of the large AI operators documents reading it when crawling. It is read by developer tools, coding assistants and agents pointed at a site, and it costs a few minutes to add.
How many links should an llms.txt have?
Usually ten to forty: the pages that answer the questions people actually ask about your site. A full sitemap defeats the purpose. Put less important pages under an “## Optional” section, which readers short on space may skip.
Should I also create llms-full.txt?
If you have documentation, yes. llms-full.txt holds the full text of your docs in one Markdown file, for tools that want everything at once. Documentation platforms such as Mintlify and GitBook generate both files automatically.
