llms.txt examples: 10 real files and 6 templates to copy
The llms.txt format fits on an index card, but the files sites actually publish range from 637 bytes to over a megabyte. Here are real ones, fetched on 10 October 2026, grouped by the kind of site that wrote them, with what each does well. After them come templates for six kinds of site that open straight in the llms.txt generator.
The format in brief
An llms.txt is Markdown served at /llms.txt: an H1 with the site’s name, a blockquote with a one-line summary, optional paragraphs of context, then H2 sections of - [title](url): notes links. A section called Optional holds pages a reader may skip. What is llms.txt covers where the format comes from and who reads it.
Ten real files at a glance
| File | Kind of site | Size | Links | What stands out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| llmstxt.org | The proposal’s own site | 637 B | 3 | The minimum: title, summary, one section |
| FastHTML | Open-source library | 4.8 KB | 21 | Gotchas before the links, and an Optional section |
| Stripe | Developer docs | 92.5 KB | 513 | A section per product, plus instructions for agents |
| Cloudflare | Developer docs | 16.9 KB | 113 | Every link is another product’s llms.txt |
| Vercel | Developer platform | 4.9 KB | 25 | Plain guidance for agents before any links |
| Warby Parker | Store | 1.7 KB | 6 | Links to Markdown versions of its pages |
| Sephora | Store | 8.0 KB | 49 | Notes that set the file’s scope |
| Fox News | News publisher | 2.2 KB | 21 | Section fronts, not articles |
| Mr. Rooter Plumbing | Local service business | 4.3 KB | 25 | Services, problems, locations and booking |
| Etsy | Marketplace | 26.7 KB | 76 | Rules for what assistants may say, not a link list |
Documentation and developer sites
Developer documentation is where llms.txt started and where it is most used: coding assistants and agents pointed at a docs site often look for it first, and platforms such as Mintlify and GitBook now generate it automatically.
llmstxt.org: the reference file
The proposal’s own file is ten lines long. Every link points at a Markdown (.md) version of a page and carries a short note.
# llms.txt
> A proposal that those interested in providing LLM-friendly content add a /llms.txt file to their site. This is a markdown file that provides brief background information and guidance, along with links to markdown files providing more detailed information.
## Docs
- [llms.txt proposal](https://llmstxt.org/index.md): The proposal for llms.txt
- [Python library docs](https://llmstxt.org/intro.html.md): Docs for `llms-txt` python lib
- [ed demo](https://llmstxt.org/ed.md): Tongue-in-cheek example of how llms.txt could be used in the classic `ed` editor, used to show how editors could incorporate llms.txt in general.
FastHTML: context first, then links
The file the proposal’s author wrote for his own library puts a short list of things a model gets wrong about it (“it is not compatible with FastAPI syntax”) before any links. Several links point off-site, to raw Markdown on GitHub. It ends with an Optional section.
# FastHTML
> FastHTML is a python library which brings together Starlette, Uvicorn, HTMX, and fastcore's `FT` "FastTags" into a library for creating server-rendered hypermedia applications. The `FastHTML` class itself inherits from `Starlette`, and adds decorator-based routing with many additions, Beforeware, automatic `FT` to HTML rendering, and much more.
Things to remember when writing FastHTML apps:
- Although parts of its API are inspired by FastAPI, it is *not* compatible with FastAPI syntax and is not targeted at creating API services
…
## Docs

- [HTMX reference](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bigskysoftware/htmx/master/www/content/reference.md): Brief description of all HTMX attributes, CSS classes, headers, events, extensions, js lib methods, and config options
Take from it: if models often misunderstand your product, say so in plain sentences under the summary. That is the cheapest, most-read part of the file.
Stripe: a large file with instructions for agents
Stripe’s file is 92.5 KB, with 513 links in 26 sections, one per product, all pointing at .md pages. It skips the summary blockquote and opens with instructions for agents instead, and one whole section is about how an agent should integrate Stripe.
# Stripe Documentation
When installing Stripe packages, always check the npm registry for the latest version rather than relying on memorized version numbers. Run `npm view stripe version` or check https://www.npmjs.com/package/stripe before pinning a version. For Python, check https://pypi.org/project/stripe/. Never hardcode an old version number from training data — always install with `@latest` or verify the current version first.

Cloudflare: an index of indexes
Cloudflare documents dozens of products, so its top-level file links to each product’s own llms.txt rather than to pages. Its llms-full.txt, the whole documentation in one file, is 67.6 MB.
# Cloudflare Developer Documentation
Explore guides and tutorials to start building on Cloudflare's platform.
> Each product below links to its own llms.txt, which contains a full index of that product's documentation pages and is the recommended way to explore a specific product's content.
## Application performance
- [Argo Smart Routing](https://developers.cloudflare.com/argo-smart-routing/llms.txt): Route web traffic across the fastest, most reliable network paths
- [Automatic Platform Optimization](https://developers.cloudflare.com/automatic-platform-optimization/llms.txt): Improve WordPress site performance by serving it from Cloudflare's global network
Take from it: when one file would run to thousands of links, split it. A short top-level file that routes to smaller ones stays useful to a reader with a small context window.
Vercel: tell agents how to use you
Vercel spends its first two sections on plain bullets, when to use Vercel and how agents should go about it, before listing a single link.
# Vercel
> Vercel is a cloud platform for building, deploying, and scaling web applications and AI workloads.
Use this index to find machine-readable documentation and platform resources. Follow the linked indexes when you need individual pages.
## When to use Vercel
- Deploy and scale web applications, APIs, and AI workloads from a Git repository or the Vercel CLI.
…
## How agents should use Vercel
- For research, fetch the Markdown documentation indexes below and follow their links to individual Markdown pages.
- For REST API calls, read the OpenAPI description and authentication documentation before choosing an operation. Ask for approval before changing account resources.
- For Vercel MCP, use an OAuth-capable MCP client and let the user authorize access to their Vercel account.
Anthropic’s documentation file, at platform.claude.com/llms.txt, takes the opposite approach: 82.7 KB listing 761 Markdown pages under product headings, with no summary line and short descriptions after a dash instead of : notes, plus a 43 MB llms-full.txt.
Online stores
Warby Parker: small, with Markdown pages behind it
Six links, each to a Markdown version of a page written for language models, and a clear instruction that the live pages are the source of truth for prices and availability.
# Warby Parker
> Warby Parker offers prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, eye exams, prescription services, insurance support, and retail vision care online and in stores.
Warby Parker is an eyewear and vision care company. Use the Markdown resources linked below as the preferred LLM-readable versions of Warby Parker's public pages.
Use live Warby Parker HTML pages, booking flows, store pages, product pages, and insurance tools as the source of truth for current pricing, promotions, appointment availability, store hours, insurance participation, product availability, contact lens offers, and other time-sensitive details.
## Vision care and prescriptions
- [Get a prescription](https://www.warbyparker.com/llms/pages/get-a-prescription.md): LLM-readable guide to getting a new prescription, renewing a prescription, and prescription service options.
- [Virtual Vision Test](https://www.warbyparker.com/llms/pages/virtual-vision-test.md): LLM-readable guide to app-based prescription renewal, eligibility, limitations, and next steps.

Sephora: say what the file covers
A “Notes for LLMs” block says the file covers the US site only, leaves out product pages, and that promotions change. Sections then follow the store’s own navigation: categories, brands, gifts, sales, guides, customer service, services, loyalty and policies.
# Sephora
> Sephora is a beauty retailer selling makeup, skincare, hair care, fragrance, bath and body products from a wide range of brands, including Sephora Collection and brands sold exclusively at Sephora. Products are available online and in stores across the United States and Canada, as well as at Sephora at Kohl's locations.
Notes for LLMs:
- This file indexes the US site. Canadian equivalents are served under '/ca/en/' and '/ca/fr/' and are not listed here.
- Product detail pages are excluded.
- Policies, pricing, promotions, and program terms are US-specific and subject to change. Verify against the live page before relying on any term.
- Pages under '## Sales & Offers' are seasonal or promotional and have a short shelf life.
## Core Shopping Categories
- [Makeup](https://www.sephora.com/shop/makeup-cosmetics): All makeup categories, covering face, eye, lip, and cheek products across a wide range of brands.
- [Skincare](https://www.sephora.com/shop/skincare): Skincare from leading brands targeting specific skin concerns across the full routine.
- [Fragrance](https://www.sephora.com/shop/fragrance): Fragrances for women and men across perfume, cologne, and scent families.
Take from it: stores should list categories, policies and help pages, not products. Products change daily and there are too many of them; an assistant can find a product from its category.
Shopify stores also answer /llms.txt by default, with a file Shopify generates. It is the same for every store, apart from the name and address, and is about how shopping agents can buy from the store rather than about the store’s content:
# Agent Instructions — Allbirds
This document describes how AI agents can interact with Allbirds's online store at https://www.allbirds.com.
Publishers
Fox News: section fronts, not articles
A news site’s articles change by the minute, so Fox News lists its section pages, then points to its sitemaps and robots.txt for everything else.
# Fox News
> Fox News is a news publisher covering the latest breaking news on US, Politics, Donald Trump, World, Entertainment, Sports, Media, Health, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It also hosts many popular TV shows like The Five, Sean Hannity, Jesse Watters Prime Time and more.

Local businesses
Mr. Rooter Plumbing: services, problems, locations
The plumbing franchise groups its pages the way a customer thinks: who they are, what they fix, common problems, local pages, and how to book.
# Mr. Rooter Plumbing
> Mr. Rooter Plumbing is a professional plumbing service brand offering residential and commercial plumbing services through locally owned and operated locations across the United States and Canada.
Mr. Rooter helps homeowners and businesses with plumbing repair, drain cleaning, sewer line services, water heaters, emergency plumbing, leak detection, and related plumbing needs. This file highlights the most important Mr. Rooter resources for AI systems, search engines, and answer engines.
## Brand Overview
- [About Mr. Rooter](https://www.mrrooter.com/about/): Overview of the Mr. Rooter brand, service philosophy, and customer experience.
- [Why Choose Mr. Rooter](https://www.mrrooter.com/why-us-/): Information about service standards, professionalism, and customer commitments.
- [Find a Location](https://www.mrrooter.com/locations/): Directory of Mr. Rooter locations.
## Core Plumbing Services
- [Residential Plumbing Services](https://www.mrrooter.com/residential-services/): Main residential plumbing service overview.
For a single-location business, put the facts an assistant is most often asked, such as address, opening hours and service area, in the details paragraph under the summary, where they can’t be missed.
Files that do something different
Etsy: a policy for assistants
Etsy’s file is a dated playbook in numbered sections: what assistants can state confidently, what they must not assert, and where each kind of request should go. Its links are inline in the text rather than in lists, so it reads more like a brief than an index.
# Etsy: official reference for AI assistants
> Etsy is a global marketplace for handmade, vintage, and made-to-order goods from independent sellers. This page is the canonical reference for how AI systems should understand Etsy and answer questions from buyers and sellers.
This page is a summary for AI assistants; where anything here conflicts with the [Terms of Use](https://www.etsy.com/legal/terms-of-use) or any other Etsy policy, those policies control. You may use this page only to browse and cite the publicly accessible Etsy.com pages referenced in it, on the terms set out here. Any other interaction remains subject to Etsy's Terms of Use and in Etsy's discretion.

Loom: “use our MCP server instead”
Loom’s 908-byte file has no page links at all. It tells agents to connect to Atlassian’s MCP server rather than crawl the site.
# Loom
> Loom is part of Atlassian. Loom's data and content are accessible through
> Atlassian's Rovo platform. AI agents should connect to the Atlassian Remote
> MCP server rather than crawling this site.
## For AI agents
To access Loom content, recordings, and related Atlassian work data, connect to
the Atlassian Remote (Rovo) MCP server instead of crawling loom.com:
- MCP server (SSE): https://mcp.atlassian.com/v1/sse
- Docs: https://support.atlassian.com/rovo/docs/getting-started-with-the-atlassian-remote-mcp-server/
What the good ones have in common
- A name and a one-line summary at the top. The summary is the line assistants quote when they describe the site.
- Sections that follow the questions people ask, not the site’s folder structure.
- A note on every link, so a reader can tell which page answers its question without opening each one.
- Absolute URLs, ideally to pages that read well as text or Markdown.
- A sense of scale. Ten to forty links for most sites. Big documentation sets split into several files or add an llms-full.txt.
Mistakes the real files show
- A sitemap pasted in. One large software company serves a 1 MB file of 3,772 links in a single list, with no title and no sections. No reader with a context window can use it.
- Relative links such as
/collections/sale, which mean nothing to a model reading the file on its own. - Generator artefacts, such as punctuation escaped with backslashes (
\&,\.) or a byte-order mark before the title. - An HTML page at the companion address. Several sites answer
/llms-full.txtwith a “not found” page that still returns a 200, which looks like a valid file to a script. The checker in the generator catches this for llms.txt.

Check yours
When your file is live, run it through the llms.txt checker: it must answer 200, as text rather than an HTML page, with an H1 first. Then run the full access check, which adds 10 points for a working llms.txt and shows whether the AI crawlers you want can reach the pages it lists.
